He sent a slave of his with a saa of wheat and said to him, "Sell it, then buy barley with the price."The slave went, took a saa of barley plus a bit more, and when he came back to Muamar, he informed him of what he had done.Muamar said to him, "Did you really do that? Go back and return it. Take only like for like, for I used to hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Food for food, like for like.'" Their staple food at that time was barley.Someone said to him, "But it is not the same kind."He replied, "I fear that it may resemble it."

أنه أرسل غلاما له بصاع من قمح فقال له بعه ثم اشتر به شعيرا فذهب الغلام فأخذ صاعا وزيادة بعض صاع فلما جاء معمرا أخبره بذلك فقال له معمر أفعلت انطلق فرده ولا تأخذ إلا مثلا بمثل فإني كنت أسمع رسول الله ﷺ يقول الطعام بالطعام مثلا بمثل وكان طعامنا يومئذ الشعير قيل فإنه ليس مثله قال إني أخاف أن يضارع
