I entered the masjid of Kufa when its masjid had only just been built. At that time it stood among the date sellers, and its walls were of sandy clay. There was a man there telling the people, and he said, "News reached me of the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the farewell pilgrimage. So I took a mount from my camels and set out until I sat waiting for him on the road to Arafah, or I stood waiting for him on the road to Arafah. Then a party of riders came, and I recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among them by his description. A man in front of him said, 'Clear the way for the riders.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Woe to him. What is it he wants?'So I drew near to him until the heads of our two camels were level with each other. I said, 'Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed that will admit me to Paradise and save me from the Fire.'He said, 'Well said, well said. Though you have been brief in your address, you have been thorough in your question. Fear Allah, associate nothing with Allah, establish the prayer, pay the zakat, make the pilgrimage to the House, and fast Ramadan. Now clear the way for the riders.'"
