My hand and the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ alternated in performing wudu from a single vessel.
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي قال حدثني خارجة بن الحارث المزني قال حدثني سالم بن سرج قال سمعت
اختلفت يدي ويد رسول الله ﷺ في الوضوء من إناء واحد
Its isnad is sahih. Kharija bin Harith is deemed reliable, and his hadith appears in the Sunan works. Salim bin Sarj, also called Ibn Juraywud, and also called Salim bin Numan, is trustworthy, and his hadith appears in the Sunan works. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud (1/20, no. 78) and Ibn Majah (1/135, no. 382), both in the chapter on purification, and by Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (1054). Scholars have differed over its interpretation.Abu Dawud placed it under the chapter "The wudu performed with the leftover water of a woman's wudu," meaning that she took water and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also took water, and each of them performed wudu after the other. This is the view held by the majority.Ibn Majah, however, placed it under the chapter "A man and a woman performing wudu from the same vessel," a view held by some scholars. This would require the woman's forearm to be uncovered, which is a part that must be concealed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not have permitted that, unless what was meant is that she was washing her face and hands from beneath her cloak. If this took place during a journey, then it would be acceptable.
