An Arabi gave the Prophet ﷺ a gift, and the Prophet rewarded him for it.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Are you satisfied?"He replied, "No."So the Prophet gave him more and asked, "Are you satisfied?"He replied, "No."The Prophet gave him still more and asked, "Are you satisfied?"He answered, "Yes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "I have resolved to accept no gift except from a Qurashi, an Ansari, or a Thaqafi."
Its isnad is sahih. It is found in Majma al-Zawaid 4/148, where it is also attributed to Bazzar and to Tabarani in Kabir with the same meaning, and he said, "The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of Sahih." Hafiz also attributed it in Talkhis, 260, to Ibn Hibban in his Sahih."That I will not accept..." etc, with the taa doubled.Ibn Athir said, this means, "I do not accept a gift except from these," because they are people of cities and villages, and they have greater knowledge of noble character, whereas the character of the Bedouin includes harshness, a departure from chivalry, and a desire for more. Its root is "awtab," where the waw was changed to a taa and merged into the taa of the ifta'ala pattern, as in "ittazan" and "ittaad," from "wazn" (weighing) and "wad" (promise).
