The Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj with his wives. Partway along the road a man dismounted and began driving their camels, and he went fast. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Careful how you drive, you have glass vessels with you," meaning the women.As they were traveling along, the camel of Safiya bint Huyayy knelt down and would not rise, and hers was among the finest mounts of them all, so she wept. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her as soon as he was told of it, and he began wiping away her tears with his own hand, but she only wept the more while he tried to quiet her. When she would not stop, he rebuked her sharply and scolded her, and he ordered the people to halt. So they halted, though he had not meant to stop there.Safiya said, "They made camp, and that day was my day. When they camped, the Prophet's ﷺ tent was pitched and he went inside it. I did not know in what state I would be intruding upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I feared he held something against me. So I went to Ayesha and said to her, 'You know that I would never sell my day with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for anything at all. But I give my day to you on the condition that you make the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pleased with me again.'"Ayesha said, "Agreed."Then Ayesha took a head covering of hers that she had dyed with saffron and sprinkled it with water to bring out its fragrance. She put on her clothes and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and lifted the edge of the tent.He said to her, "What brings you, Ayesha? This is not your day."She said, "That is Allah's bounty, which He grants to whom He wills."Then he was with his wife. When it was time to set out again, he said to Zaynab bint Jahsh, "Zaynab, lend your sister Safiya a camel to ride." Zaynab had more mounts than any of them.She said, "Am I to lend a camel to your Jewess?"The Prophet ﷺ grew angry when he heard this from her, and he withdrew from her and did not speak to her until he reached Makkah, through the days of Mina on that journey, and until he returned to Madinah, and through Muharram and Safar as well. He did not come to her and did not give her her turn, and she gave up hope of him.Then when the month of Rabi Awwal came, he came in to her. She saw his shadow and said, "That is the shadow of a man, and the Prophet ﷺ does not come in to me. Who can this be?" Then the Prophet ﷺ entered, and when she saw him she said, "Messenger of Allah, I hardly know what to do, now that you have come in to me."Zaynab had a servant girl whom she used to keep hidden from the Prophet ﷺ, and she said, "So-and-so is yours."Then the Prophet ﷺ walked over to Zaynab's bed, which had been stood up and put away, and he set it down with his own hand. Then he was with his wife, and he was pleased with them all.
