Yazid bin Asam reported,

A man invited us, and he brought out a tray bearing thirteen lizards. This was at supper. Some of us ate, and others refrained. The next morning we went to Ibn Abbas and asked him about it. Those sitting with him spoke at length on the matter, until one of them said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I will neither eat it nor declare it forbidden.'"Ibn Abbas replied, "What a poor thing you have said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent only to declare what is lawful and what is forbidden."Then he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at Maymunah's house, and with him were Fadl bin Abbas, Khalid bin Walid, and a woman. A tray was brought bearing bread and lizard meat. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached out to take some, Maymunah said to him, 'Messenger of Allah, that is lizard meat.' He withdrew his hand and said, 'It is meat I have never eaten, but the rest of you may eat it.' So Fadl bin Abbas, Khalid bin Walid, and the woman ate. Maymunah said, 'I will not eat any food that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not eaten.'"
