Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman reported,

My father resolved to perform Umrah. When the time for his departure drew near, he said, "My son, what if we visited the governor to bid him farewell?"I replied, "As you wish."So we entered upon Marwan, and there was a group of people with him, among them Abdullah bin Zubayr. They began discussing the two units of prayer that Ibn Zubayr would offer after the afternoon prayer.Marwan asked him, "On whose authority did you take this practice, Ibn Zubayr?"He answered, "Abu Hurairah informed me of them, narrating from Ayesha."Marwan then sent a message to Ayesha asking, "What are these two units of prayer that Ibn Zubayr mentions, claiming that Abu Hurairah informed him on your authority that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray them after the afternoon prayer?"She sent back word saying, "Umm Salama informed me of them."So Marwan sent to Umm Salama asking, "What are these two units of prayer that Ayesha claims you told her about, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer them after the afternoon prayer?"She replied, "May Allah forgive Ayesha. She has placed my account in the wrong context. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the noon prayer, and some wealth had been brought to him. He sat distributing it until the caller to prayer came to him for the afternoon prayer. He prayed the afternoon prayer, then came in to me, for it was my day, and offered two brief units of prayer.I asked, 'What are these two units, Messenger of Allah? Have you been commanded to perform them?'He replied, 'No, but they are two units I used to pray after the noon prayer. The distribution of this wealth distracted me until the caller came to me for the afternoon prayer, and I did not wish to leave them out.'"Ibn Zubayr exclaimed, "Allahu Akbar! Did he not pray them at least once? By Allah, I will never abandon them."Umm Salama said, "I never saw him pray them before that occasion or after it."

أجمع أبي على العمرة فلما حضر خروجه قال أي بني لو دخلنا على الأمير فودعناه قلت ما شئت قال فدخلنا على مروان وعنده نفر فيهم عبد الله بن الزبير فذكروا الركعتين التي يصليهما ابن الزبير بعد العصر فقال له مروان ممن أخذتهما يا ابن الزبير قال أخبرني بهما أبو هريرة عن عائشة فأرسل مروان إلى عائشة ما ركعتان يذكرهما ابن الزبير أن أبا هريرة أخبره عنك أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يصليهما بعد العصر فأرسلت إليه أخبرتني أم سلمة فأرسل إلى أم سلمة ما ركعتان زعمت عائشة أنك أخبرتيها أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يصليهما بعد العصر فقالت يغفر الله لعائشة لقد وضعت أمري على غير موضعه صلى رسول الله ﷺ الظهر وقد أتي بمال فقعد يقسمه حتى أتاه المؤذن بالعصر فصلى العصر ثم انصرف إلي وكان يومي فركع ركعتين خفيفتين فقلت ما هاتان الركعتان يا رسول الله أمرت بهما قال لا ولكنهما ركعتان كنت أركعهما بعد الظهر فشغلني قسم هذا المال حتى جاءني المؤذن بالعصر فكرهت أن أدعهما فقال ابن الزبير الله أكبر أليس قد صلاهما مرة واحدة والله لا أدعهما أبدا وقالت أم سلمة ما رأيته صلاهما قبلها ولا بعدها
