When they wanted to wash the body of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they disagreed about how to proceed. They said, "By Allah, we do not know what to do. Should we strip the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as we strip our dead, or should we wash him while his clothes are still on him?"She said, when they disagreed, Allah cast sleep upon them until, by Allah, every man in the group had his chin resting on his chest, fast asleep.She said, then someone spoke to them from a corner of the room, and they did not know who it was, saying, "Wash the Prophet ﷺ with his clothes still on him."She said, so they rose toward him and washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in his shirt. Water mixed with lote leaves was poured over him, and the men rubbed him through the shirt.She used to say, "Had I known at the outset what I came to know later, none would have washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except his wives."
حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال حدثني يحيي بن عباد بن عبد الله بن الزبير عن أبيه
لما أرادوا غسل رسول الله ﷺ اختلفوا فيه فقالوا والله ما نرى كيف نصنع أنجرد رسول الله ﷺ كما نجرد موتانا أم نغسله وعليه ثيابه قالت فلما اختلفوا أرسل الله عليهم السنة حتى والله ما من القوم من رجل إلا ذقنه في صدره نائما قالت ثم كلمهم من ناحية البيت لا يدرون من هو فقال اغسلوا النبي ﷺ وعليه ثيابه قالت فثاروا إليه فغسلوا رسول الله ﷺ وهو في قميصه يفاض عليه الماء والسدر ويدلكه الرجال بالقميص وكانت تقول لو استقبلت من الأمر ما استدبرت ما غسل رسول الله ﷺ إلا نساؤه
