While Abdul-Malik bin Marwan was circumambulating the Kaaba, he said, "May Allah destroy Ibn Zubayr! How he lies against Umm Muiminin, claiming that he heard her say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Ayesha, were it not that your people are recent in their abandonment of disbelief, I would have demolished the Kaaba and added to it from the Hijr, for your people fell short in its construction.'"Harith bin Abdullah said to him, "Do not say this, Commander of the Faithful, for I myself heard Ayesha narrate it."Abdul-Malik asked, "You heard it yourself?"Harith replied, "Yes, I heard it."Abdul-Malik said, "Had I heard this before I demolished it, I would have left it as Ibn Zubayr had built it."

أن عبد الملك بن مروان بينما هو يطوف بالبيت إذ قال قاتل الله ابن الزبير كيف يكذب على أم المؤمنين ويزعم أنه سمعها وهي تقول إن رسول الله ﷺ قال يا عائشة لولا حدثان قومك بالكفر نقضت البيت حتى أزيد فيه من الحجر إن قومك قصروا في البناء قال فقال له الحارث بن عبد الله لا تقل هذا يا أمير المؤمنين فأنا سمعت عائشة تقول قال أنت سمعته قال أنا سمعته قال لو سمعت هذا قبل أن أنقضه لتركته على ما بنى ابن الزبير
