The Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah as a collector of charity. A man quarreled with him over his charity, and Abu Jahm struck him, wounding his head. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Retaliation, Messenger of Allah!"The Prophet ﷺ said, "You shall have such-and-such," but they were not satisfied.He said, "Then you shall have such-and-such," but they were not satisfied.He said, "Then you shall have such-and-such," and they were satisfied.The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They said, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people and said, "These men of Layth came to me seeking retaliation. I offered them such-and-such, and they were satisfied. Are you satisfied?"They said, "No."The Muhajirun were about to attack them, but the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to hold back, and they held back. Then he called the Layth men over and increased the offer and said, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."He said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They said, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people, then said, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق قال حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن عروة
أن النبي ﷺ بعث أبا جهم بن حذيفة مصدقا فلاحه رجل في صدقته فضربه أبو جهم فشجه فأتوا النبي ﷺ فقالوا القود يا رسول الله فقال النبي ﷺ لكم كذا وكذا فلم يرضوا قال فلكم كذا وكذا فلم يرضوا قال فلكم كذا وكذا فرضوا فقال النبي ﷺ إني خاطب على الناس ومخبرهم برضاكم قالوا نعم فخطب النبي ﷺ فقال إن هؤلاء الليثيين أتوني يريدون القود فعرضت عليهم كذا وكذا فرضوا رضيتم قالوا لا فهم المهاجرون بهم فأمر النبي ﷺ أن يكفوا فكفوا ثم دعاهم فزادهم وقال أرضيتم قالوا نعم قال فإني خاطب على الناس ومخبرهم برضاكم قالوا نعم فخطب النبي ﷺ ثم قال أرضيتم قالوا نعم
