The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one night in the mosque during the month of Ramadan, and a group of people prayed with him. He prayed a second night, and on that night more people gathered than on the first. On the third or fourth night, the mosque was packed so full that it overflowed with people, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them. The people began calling out to him, "The prayer, the prayer!" but he still did not come out. When morning came, Umar bin Khattab said to him, "The people kept waiting for you last night, Messenger of Allah."He replied, "Their situation was not hidden from me, but I feared that it would be made obligatory upon them."
