The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never sent Zayd bin Haritha out with an army without placing him in command over them, and had he survived him, he would have appointed him as his successor.

ما بعث رسول الله ﷺ زيد بن حارثة في جيش قط إلا أمره عليهم ولو بقي بعده استخلفه
