Yazid bin Babnus reported,

A companion and I went to Ayesha and asked permission to enter. She threw down a cushion for us and drew the curtain close about herself. My companion said, "Umm Muiminin, what do you say about irak?"She asked, "What is irak?" Then she struck my companion's shoulder and said, "Enough. You have caused your brother discomfort." Then she said, "Irak is not menstruation. Say what Allah said, menstruation."Then she said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would draw me close and take pleasure from my head while there was a garment between him and me, and I was menstruating."Then she said, "Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by my door, he would say some word by which Allah عز وجل would bring benefit. One day he passed and said nothing. Then he passed again and said nothing, twice or three times. So I said, 'Jariya, place a cushion for me by the door,' and I bound up my head. He passed by me and said, 'Ayesha, what is the matter with you?'I said, 'My head is hurting me.'He said, 'And I, oh my head!' Then he went away.It was not long before he was brought back, carried in a cloak. He came in to me and sent word to his wives, saying, 'I have fallen ill, and I am not able to move about among you. Give me leave to stay with Ayesha.' (Or perhaps he said Safiya.) I had never nursed anyone before him.One day, while his head was resting on my shoulder, his head inclined toward mine. I thought he wanted something from my head, but a cool drop of moisture came from his mouth and fell upon the hollow of my throat, and my skin shivered at it. I realized he had passed away, so I covered him with a garment. Then Umar and Mughira bin Shuba came and asked permission to enter. I gave them leave and drew the curtain close about myself. Umar looked at him and said, 'Oh, what a swoon! How severe is the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ swoon!' Then the two of them rose, and when they drew near the door, Mughira said, 'Umar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.'Umar said, 'You lie. Rather you are a man whom turmoil has confounded. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not die until Allah عز وجل has destroyed the hypocrites.'Then Abu Bakr came. I lifted the curtain and he looked at him and said, 'To Allah we belong and to Him we return. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.' Then he came to him from the direction of his head, bent his mouth down, and kissed his forehead, saying, 'Oh, my Prophet!' Then he raised his head, bent his mouth down again, kissed his forehead, and said, 'Oh, my chosen one!' Then he raised his head, bent his mouth down, kissed his forehead, and said, 'Oh, my dear friend! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.'Then he went out to the masjid, where Umar was addressing the people, speaking and saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not die until Allah عز وجل has destroyed the hypocrites.'Abu Bakr then spoke. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, 'Allah عز وجل says, "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" [Zumar 39:30],' and he recited to the end of the verse. Then he recited, '"And Muhammad is not but a messenger. Messengers have passed away before him. So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?" [Al Imran 3:144],' and he recited to the end of the verse. Then he said, 'Whoever used to worship Allah عز وجل, Allah is living. And whoever used to worship Muhammad, Muhammad has died.'Umar said, 'Is it really in the Book of Allah? I never realized it was in the Book of Allah.'Then Umar said, 'People, this is Abu Bakr, and he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge your allegiance to him.' And they pledged their allegiance to him."
