Aswad reported,

I said to Ayesha, "Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sleep during the first part of the night and rise in the latter part. When he rose, he would perform ablution and pray as much as Allah عز وجل decreed for him. If he had need of his wife, he would go to her, otherwise he would lie back down on his bed. If he had been with his wife, he would sleep as he was without touching water, until, at the first call to prayer, he would spring up. By Allah, she did not say 'he stood,' she said 'he sprang up.' If he was in a state of major ritual impurity, he would pour water over himself. By Allah, she did not say 'he bathed,' nor did she say 'he performed ablution as one does for prayer.' Then he would pray two rakahs and go out to the mosque."
