I spent the night at the house of my aunt Maymunah and watched the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to see how he prayed. He got up, relieved himself, then washed his face and hands and went back to sleep. Then he rose and went over to the waterskin, untied its strap, and poured water into a basin or large bowl. He tipped his hand into it and performed a fine ablution, neither sparing nor excessive. Then he stood up to pray.I came and stood on his left, but he took hold of me and placed me on his right. The Messenger of Allah's ﷺ prayer came to thirteen rakahs in total. Then he slept until he was breathing audibly, for we used to recognize when he was asleep by his breathing. Then he went out for the prayer and prayed, and during his prayer or his prostration he kept saying, "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light on my right, light on my left, light before me, light behind me, light above me, light below me, and make me light."Shuba said, "Or he said, 'and grant me light.'"He said, Amr bin Dinar also reported to me from Kurayb from Ibn Abbas that he slept lying on his side.
Both of its chains are sahih. Shubah narrated it from Salama bin Kuhayl, then he indicated his narration of it from Amr bin Dinar. The hadith is given in longer form at 2559, and see also 1912, 2083, 2084, 2164, 2572.
