Muawiya led the people in the afternoon prayer. When he turned around, he saw some people praying after the Asr prayer. He went inside, and Ibn Abbas came in to see him, and I was with him. Muawiya made room for him on the couch, and he sat down beside him.Muawiya said, "What is this prayer I saw the people performing? I never saw the Prophet ﷺ perform it, nor did he command it."Ibn Abbas replied, "That is what Ibn Zubayr instructs them to do."Then Ibn Zubayr came in, greeted them, and sat down.Muawiya said, "Ibn Zubayr, what is this prayer that you are telling the people to perform? We never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform it, nor did he command it."He answered, "Ayesha, the Mother of the Believers, told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed it at her home."He said, Muawiya then ordered me and another man to go to Ayesha and ask her about this. So I went in to see her and asked her about it, and I informed her of what Ibn Zubayr had reported from her.She said, "Ibn Zubayr did not remember it accurately. What I told him was that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once prayed these two units after Asr at my house. I asked him, 'You have prayed two units that you do not normally pray.' He said, 'Something was brought to me, and I became occupied with distributing it and missed the two units after Dhuhr. Then Bilal came and called me to the prayer, and I disliked keeping the people waiting, so I prayed them now.'"He said, So I returned and told Muawiya.Ibn Zubayr then said, "Did he not pray them? Then we will not abandon them."Muawiya said to him, "You will never stop being contrary."
حدثنا علي بن عاصم قال أخبرنا حنظلة السدوسي
صلى معاوية بالناس العصر فالتفت فإذا أناس يصلون بعد العصر فدخل ودخل عليه ابن عباس وأنا معه فأوسع له معاوية على السرير فجلس معه قال ما هذه الصلاة التي رأيت الناس يصلونها ولم أر النبي ﷺ يصليها ولا أمر بها قال ذاك ما يفتيهم ابن الزبير فدخل ابن الزبير فسلم فجلس فقال معاوية يا ابن الزبير ما هذه الصلاة التي تأمر الناس يصلونها لم نر رسول الله ﷺ صلاها ولا أمر بها قال حدثتني عائشة أم المؤمنين أن رسول الله ﷺ صلاها عندها في بيتها قال فأمرني معاوية ورجل آخر أن نأتي عائشة فنسألها عن ذلك قال فدخلت عليها فسألتها عن ذلك فأخبرتها بما أخبر ابن الزبير عنها فقالت لم يحفظ ابن الزبير إنما حدثته أن رسول الله ﷺ صلى هذه الركعتين بعد العصر عندي فسألته قلت إنك صليت ركعتين لم تكن تصليهما قال إنه كان أتاني شيء فشغلت في قسمته عن الركعتين بعد الظهر وأتاني بلال فناداني بالصلاة فكرهت أن أحبس الناس فصليتهما قال فرجعت فأخبرت معاوية قال قال ابن الزبير أليس قد صلاهما فلا ندعهما فقال له معاوية لا تزال مخالفا أبدا
