Barirah was under a contract of manumission with some people from the Ansar. I wanted to buy her, so I told her to go to them and let them know that I wanted to buy her and set her free. They said, "If you assign her right of guardianship to us, we will sell her to you."I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, and he said, "Buy her and free her, for the right of guardianship belongs only to the one who frees the slave."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came in while a pot was bubbling with meat. He asked, "Where did this come from?"I replied, "Barirah gave it to us as a gift. It had been given to her in charity."He said, "It was charity for her, but for us it is a gift."She also said that Barirah had been married to a slave. When she was freed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Choose. If you wish, you may remain with this slave, or if you wish, you may separate from him."
