I purchased Barirah, but her owners stipulated that the right of guardianship would remain with them. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Buy her and free her, for guardianship belongs only to the one who pays the silver."So I bought her and freed her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then summoned her and gave her the choice regarding her husband, and she chose herself. Her husband was a free man.

اشتريت بريرة فاشترط أهلها ولاءها فذكرت ذلك لرسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ اشتريها فأعتقيها فإنما الولاء لمن أعطى الورق قالت فاشتريتها فأعتقتها قالت فدعاها رسول الله ﷺ فخيرها من زوجها فاختارت نفسها وكان زوجها حرا
