Numan bin Bashir reported,

Muawiya gave me a letter to take to Ayesha. So I went to Ayesha and handed her Muawiya's letter.She said, "My son, shall I tell you something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"I said, "Yes, please."She said, "Hafsa and I were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, and he said, 'I wish there were a man here to keep us company in conversation.'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, shall I send for Abu Bakr?'He remained silent. Then he said again, 'I wish there were a man here to keep us company in conversation.'Hafsa said, 'Shall I send for Umar?'He remained silent. Then he said, 'No.' Then he called a man and whispered something to him, and before long Uthman arrived. The Prophet ﷺ turned his face and his conversation toward him, and I heard him say to him, 'Uthman, Allah may clothe you in a shirt. If they try to make you take it off, do not take it off.' He said this three times."I said, "Mother of the Believers, where were you from this hadith all this time?"She said, "My son, by Allah, I had forgotten it so completely that I did not even think I had heard it."

حدثنا عبد الرحمن حدثنا معاوية عن ربيعة يعني ابن يزيد عن عبد الله بن أبي قيس أن

النعمان بن بشير حدثه قال

كتب معي معاوية إلى عائشة قال فقدمت على عائشة فدفعت إليها كتاب معاوية فقالت يا بني ألا أحدثك بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ قلت بلى قالت فإني كنت أنا وحفصة يوما من ذاك عند رسول الله ﷺ فقال لو كان عندنا رجل يحدثنا فقلت يا رسول الله ألا أبعث لك إلى أبي بكر فسكت ثم قال لو كان عندنا رجل يحدثنا فقالت حفصة ألا أرسل لك إلى عمر فسكت ثم قال لا ثم دعا رجلا فساره بشيء فما كان إلا أن أقبل عثمان فأقبل عليه بوجهه وحديثه فسمعته يقول له يا عثمان إن الله عز وجل لعله أن يقمصك قميصا فإن أرادوك على خلعه فلا تخلعه ثلاث مرار قال فقلت يا أم المؤمنين فأين كنت عن هذا الحديث فقالت يا بني والله لقد أنسيته حتى ما ظننت أني سمعته
