I asked Ayesha whether poetry used to be recited in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She replied that it was the most detestable form of speech to him.
حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا الأسود بن شيبان قال حدثنا
سألت عائشة هل كان رسول الله ﷺ يتسامع عنده الشعر قالت كان أبغض الحديث إليه
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Nawfal bin Abu Iqrab is trustworthy, and his hadith appears in Sahihayn. Haythami said in 8/119, "The men of Ahmad are the men of the sahih." What is meant in the hadith is listening to poets competing and vying with one another, whereas mere listening has been established as sahih, for the Prophet ﷺ asked many people to recite poetry to him.
