When Hilal bin Umaya accused his wife of adultery, it was said to him, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will surely flog you with eighty lashes."He replied, "Allah is more just than to have me struck with eighty lashes when He knows that I saw with certainty and heard with certainty. By Allah, He will never have me flogged."Then the verse of mutual cursing was revealed.
حدثنا حسين حدثنا جرير عن أيوب عن عكرمة
لما قذف هلال بن أمية امرأته قيل له والله ليجلدنك رسول الله ﷺ ثمانين جلدة قال الله أعدل من ذلك أن يضربني ثمانين ضربة وقد علم أني قد رأيت حتى استيقنت وسمعت حتى استيقنت لا والله لا يضربني أبدا قال فنزلت آية الملاعنة
