Aishah said that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek permission, when it was the day of one of us, after this verse was revealed, "You may put off whom you will of them, and take to yourself whom you will. And if you desire any of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame upon you" [Ahzab 33:51].She said, I asked her, "What did you used to say to him?"She replied, "I would say to him, 'If that choice is mine to make, then, Messenger of Allah, I do not wish to prefer anyone over you.'"
Its isnad is sahih. Asim is Ibn Sulayman Ahwal, who is a well-known trustworthy narrator. One of those who worked on Musnad Ayesha among the students of the Usul al-Din department at Al-Azhar in Cairo judged this hadith to be daif. What misled him was that the narrator before it, Asim bin Ubaydullah, made him think it was daif. This is one of the grave errors these students used to fall into. I have examined all their work and found that they never gave the isnad its due study. What is even worse and more troubling is that this passed by a supervisor and a committee. The committee might be excused because their reading was quick, but the student who is engaged in the study of hadith can never be excused. They have five years to study fewer than a thousand isnads.Bukhari narrated this hadith in the tafsir, 8/525, number 4789 (Fath edition), Muslim in 2/1103, number 1476, in the chapter on divorce, and Abu Dawud in 2/243, number 2136.
