It was said to her that Ibn Umar attributed to the Prophet ﷺ the statement that the deceased is punished by the weeping of the living.She replied, "Abu Abdul-Rahman has forgotten. He only said that the family of the deceased weeps over him while he is being punished for his own sin."
حدثنا ابن نمير حدثنا هشام عن أبيه
قيل لها إن ابن عمر يرفع إلى النبي ﷺ إن الميت يعذب ببكاء الحي قالت وهل أبو عبد الرحمن إنما قال إن أهل الميت يبكون عليه وإنه ليعذب بجرمه
Its chain of transmission is sahih, it has preceded many times. It is found in Bukhari 3/151 no. 1289, Muslim 2/642 no. 931, Abu Dawud 3/164 no. 3129, and Tirmidhi 3/318 no. 1004, who said, hasan sahih. All of them are in the book of funerals.
