The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray two units of prayer between the call to prayer and the dawn prayer.
حدثنا يحيى عن هشام قال حدثنا يحيى عن أبي سلمة قال
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يصلي الركعتين بين النداء وصلاة الصبح
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari related it in 2/103, no. 619, Fath, in the chapter on adhan. Muslim related it in 1/501, no. 724, in the chapter on travelers. And Nasai related it in 1/206, no. 1781, in the chapter on standing in prayer at night.
