Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

A man asked him about the bath on Friday, whether it was obligatory.He replied, "No, but whoever wishes may take a bath. Let me tell you about how this bathing began. The people were poor, and they used to wear wool, and they would water their date palms by carrying water on their backs. The Prophet's mosque ﷺ was small, with a low ceiling. The people came in their woolen garments and began to sweat. The Prophet's pulpit ﷺ was short, only three steps high. So the people sweated in their wool, and the smell of the wool rose from them, and they began to bother one another with their odors, until the smell reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit. He then said, 'People, when you come for Friday prayer, take a bath, and let each of you apply the best perfume he has.'"

وسأله رجل عن الغسل يوم الجمعة أواجب هو قال لا ومن شاء اغتسل وسأحدثكم عن بدء الغسل كان الناس محتاجين وكانوا يلبسون الصوف وكانوا يسقون النخل على ظهورهم وكان مسجد النبي ﷺ ضيقا متقارب السقف فراح الناس في الصوف فعرقوا وكان منبر النبي ﷺ قصيرا إنما هو ثلاث درجات فعرق الناس في الصوف فثارت أرواحهم أرواح الصوف فتأذى بعضهم ببعض حتى بلغت أرواحهم رسول الله ﷺ وهو على المنبر فقال يا أيها الناس إذا جئتم الجمعة فاغتسلوا وليمس أحدكم من أطيب طيب إن كان عنده
