The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us the choice, and we chose him, and he did not count that against us as anything.
حدثنا أبو معاوية حدثنا الأعمش عن مسلم عن مسروق
خيرنا رسول الله ﷺ فاخترناه فلم يعددها علينا شيئا
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari related it, 9/367 no. 5262, Muslim 2/1104 no. 1477, Abu Dawud 2/262 no. 2203, Tirmidhi 3/474 no. 1179, who said, hasan sahih, Nasai 6/161 no. 3445, and Ibn Majah 1/661 no. 2052, all of them in the chapter on divorce, on giving the wife the choice.
