A thief was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he ordered that his hand be cut off, and so it was done. The people said, "Messenger of Allah, we did not think you would go this far with him."He replied, "Even if it were Fatimah, I would have cut off her hand."Then Sufyan said, "I am not sure exactly how it was."
حدثنا سفيان عن أيوب بن موسى عن الزهري عن عروة
أن النبي ﷺ أتي بسارق فأمر به فقطع فقالوا يا رسول الله ما كنا نرى أن يبلغ منه هذا قال لو كانت فاطمة لقطعتها ثم قال سفيان لا أدري كيف هو
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it (4/132, no. 4373), Ibn Majah (2/851, no. 2547), and Tirmidhi (4/37, no. 1430), who said it is hasan sahih. Similarly, Muslim narrated it (3/1315, no. 1688) and Bukhari (12/87, no. 6788), all of them in the chapters on legal punishments.
