Nafi, whose wife was an umm walad of Abdullah bin Umar, narrated to me that Abdullah bin Umar bought a slave girl on the road to Mecca, freed her, and instructed her to perform the pilgrimage with him. He looked for sandals for her but could not find any, so he cut a pair of leather socks for her below the ankles.Ibn Ishaq said, I mentioned this to Ibn Shihab, and he said, Salim narrated to me that Abdullah used to do that. Then Safiya bint Abu Ubayd narrated to him that Ayesha had told her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to grant women a dispensation regarding leather socks, so he abandoned that practice.

حدثني نافع وكانت امرأته أم ولد لعبد الله بن عمر حدثته أن عبد الله بن عمر ابتاع جارية بطريق مكة فأعتقها وأمرها أن تحج معه فابتغى لها نعلين فلم يجدهما فقطع لها خفين أسفل من الكعبين قال ابن إسحاق فذكرت ذلك لابن شهاب فقال حدثني سالم أن عبد الله كان يصنع ذلك ثم حدثته صفية بنت أبي عبيد أن عائشة حدثتها أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يرخص للنساء في الخفين فترك ذلك
