A man from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ traveled to Fadala bin Ubayd while he was in Egypt. He came upon him while he was drawing water for a camel of his.The man said, "I have not come to visit you. I have only come for a hadith that reached me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which I hoped you might have knowledge of."He noticed that Fadala was disheveled, so he said, "Why is it that I see you disheveled when you are the governor of this land?"Fadala replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid us from much of luxurious living."He also saw him barefoot and said, "Why is it that I see you barefoot?"Fadala replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to go barefoot at times."
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أخبرني الجريري
أن رجلا من أصحاب النبي ﷺ رحل إلى فضالة بن عبيد وهو بمصر فقدم عليه وهو يمد ناقة له فقال إني لم آتك زائرا إنما أتيتك لحديث بلغني عن رسول الله ﷺ رجوت أن يكون عندك منه علم فرآه شعثا فقال ما لي أراك شعثا وأنت أمير البلد قال إن رسول الله ﷺ كان ينهانا عن كثير من الإرفاه ورآه حافيا فقال ما لي أراك حافيا قال إن رسول الله ﷺ أمرنا أن نحتفي أحيانا
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 4/75, no. 4160, in "Combing the Hair," and by Nasai, 8/132, no. 5058, in "Adornment," and similarly by Darimi, 1/151, no. 571. Irfah means comfort and luxury.
