Both men had witnessed the battle of Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the noon prayer, then he went to the shade of a tree and sat beneath it while at Hunayn.Aqra bin Habis and Uyayna bin Hisn bin Hudhayfa bin Badr came up to him, disputing over the case of Amir bin al-Adbat al-Ashjai. Uyayna was demanding retribution for Amir's blood, as he was at that time the chief of Ghatafan, while Aqra bin Habis was defending Muhallim bin Jaththama on account of his standing among Khindif.They went back and forth in their dispute before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we listened. We heard Uyayna saying, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, I will not let him go until I make his women taste the same grief that mine have tasted."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept replying, "Rather, take the blood-money. Fifty camels now during this journey of ours, and fifty more when we return."But Uyayna refused. Then a man from Banu Layth named Mukaytil stood up. He was short and stocky. He said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I can find no comparison for this slain man in the early days of Islam except like a flock of sheep that came to drink, and when the first of them were shot at, the rest fled. Set the precedent today, and change it tomorrow."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand and said, "Rather, take the blood-money. Fifty camels now during this journey of ours, and fifty more when we return."So they accepted the blood-money. Then they said, "Where is your companion, so that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may seek forgiveness for him?"A tall, lean, dark-skinned man stood up, wearing a robe in which he had prepared himself to be killed, until he sat down before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is your name?"He replied, "I am Muhallim bin Jaththama."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then raised his hand and said, "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim bin Jaththama."He stood up, wiping his tears with the edge of his cloak.As for us among ourselves, we say that we hope the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did seek forgiveness for him later. But as for what appeared outwardly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, this is what happened.
حدثنا يعقوب حدثني أبي عن محمد بن إسحاق حدثني محمد بن جعفر بن الزبير قال سمعت زياد بن ضمرة بن سعيد السلمي يحدث
وكانا شهدا حنينا مع رسول الله ﷺ قالا صلى بنا رسول الله ﷺ الظهر ثم عمد إلى ظل شجرة فجلس فيه وهو بحنين فقام إليه الأقرع بن حابس وعيينة بن حصن بن حذيفة بن بدر يختصمان في عامر بن الأضبط الأشجعي وعيينة يطلب بدم عامر وهو يومئذ رئيس غطفان والأقرع بن حابس يدفع عن محلم بن جثامة بمكانه من خندف فتداولا الخصومة عند رسول الله ﷺ ونحن نسمع فسمعنا عيينة وهو يقول والله يا رسول الله لا أدعه حتى أذيق نساءه من الحر ما ذاق نسائي ورسول الله ﷺ يقول بل تأخذون الدية خمسين في سفرنا هذا وخمسين إذا رجعنا قال وهو يأبى عليه إذ قام رجل من بني ليث يقال له مكيتل قصير مجموع فقال يا رسول الله والله ما وجدت لهذا القتيل شبها في غرة الإسلام إلا كغنم وردت فرميت أوائلها فنفرت أخراها اسنن اليوم وغير غدا قال فرفع رسول الله ﷺ يده ثم قال بل تأخذون الدية خمسين في سفرنا هذا وخمسين إذا رجعنا قال فقبلوا الدية ثم قالوا أين صاحبكم يستغفر له رسول الله ﷺ قال فقام رجل آدم ضرب طويل عليه حلة له قد كان تهيأ فيها للقتل حتى جلس بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ فقال ما اسمك قال أنا محلم بن جثامة قال فرفع رسول الله ﷺ يده ثم قال اللهم لا تغفر لمحلم بن جثامة فقام وهو يتلقى دمعه بفضل ردائه قال فأما نحن بيننا فنقول إنا نرجو أن يكون رسول الله ﷺ قد استغفر له وأما ما ظهر من رسول الله ﷺ فهذا
