Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I encounter a man from the disbelievers and he fights me, and we exchange two strikes, and he cuts off one of my hands with the sword, then takes refuge from me behind a tree and says, 'I submit to Allah'? Should I still fight him, Messenger of Allah, after he has said that?The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Do not kill him."I said, "Messenger of Allah, but he cut off one of my hands, and only said that after cutting it off. Should I fight him?"The Messenger of Allah said, "Do not kill him. For if you kill him, he is in the position you were in before you killed him, and you are in the position he was in before he spoke the words he spoke."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أنبأنا ابن جريج أخبرني ابن شهاب عن عطاء بن يزيد الليثي عن عبيد الله بن عدي بن الخيار أنه قال أخبرني أن
يا رسول الله أرأيت إن لقيت رجلا من الكفار فقاتلني فاختلفنا ضربتين فضرب إحدى يدي بالسيف فقطعها ثم لاذ مني بشجرة فقال أسلمت لله أقاتله يا رسول الله بعد أن قالها فقال رسول الله ﷺ لا تقتله قلت يا رسول الله إنه قطع إحدى يدي ثم قال ذلك بعد ما قطعها أقاتله فقال رسول الله لا تقتله فإن قتلته فإنه بمنزلتك قبل أن تقتله وأنت بمنزلته قبل أن يقول كلمته التي قال
