A companion of mine and I came to Medina and presented ourselves to people, but no one took us in as guests. So we went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him about our situation, and he took us to his home. He had four she-goats there, and he said, "Miqdad, milk them, divide the milk into four portions, and give each person his share."I used to do exactly that. One night I set aside the Prophet's ﷺ portion for him, but he was delayed, and I lay down on my bed. My inner self said to me, "The Prophet ﷺ has gone to some household of the Ansar where he has been given food. If only you got up and drank this drink." It kept urging me until I rose and drank his portion. When it settled in my stomach and was secure, I was overcome by remorse over what I had done. I thought, "The Prophet ﷺ will come hungry and thirsty and will find nothing in the cup."So I covered my face with a cloth. The Prophet ﷺ came and gave a greeting that the awake would hear but would not wake the sleeper. He uncovered the cup and saw nothing in it. Then he raised his head to the sky and said, "O Allah, give drink to whoever has given me drink, and feed whoever has fed me."I seized the opportunity of his prayer, got up, took the knife, and approached the goats to feel which of them was the fattest, so I could slaughter her. My hand fell upon the udder of one of them, and behold, it was full. I looked at another, and it too was full. I checked them all, and they were all full. So I milked into the vessel and brought it to him.I said, "Drink."He said, "What is the story, Miqdad?"I said, "Drink, and then I will tell you."He said, "This must be some mischief of yours, Miqdad."He drank, then said, "Drink."I said, "Drink, Prophet of Allah."So he drank until he was satisfied. Then I took it and drank, and afterward I told him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go on."I said, "It was such and such."The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is a blessing that came down from heaven. Why did you not tell me so I could have given your two companions a drink?"I said, "As long as you and I have drunk this blessing, I do not care who missed out."
