I said, "Messenger of Allah, what is your view about a man who struck me with his sword and cut off my hand, then took shelter from me behind a tree and said, 'There is no god but Allah'? Should I kill him?"He said, "No."I repeated the question two or three times, and he said, "No, unless you wish to be like him before he said what he said, and for him to be like you before you did what you did."

قلت يا رسول الله أرأيت رجلا ضربني بالسيف فقطع يدي ثم لاذ مني بشجرة ثم قال لا إله إلا الله أأقتله قال لا فعدت مرتين أو ثلاثا فقال لا إلا أن تكون مثله قبل أن يقول ما قال ويكون مثلك قبل أن تفعل ما فعلت

Its chain is sahih, and Abdullah bin Adi bin Khiyar was a companion among the younger companions. Bukhari narrated the hadith, 7/321 no. 4019, in Fath al-Bari, in the chapter on blood money, and 12/187 no. 6865, in the chapter on blood money. Muslim also narrated it, 1/95 no. 95, in the chapter on faith, on the prohibition of killing a disbeliever after he has said, "There is no god but Allah." Abu Dawud narrated it as well, 3/45 no. 2644, in the chapter on jihad, on the basis on which the polytheists are to be fought.
