Miqdad bin Aswad reported,

Two companions of mine and I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we were stricken with severe hunger. We approached people seeking hospitality, but no one took us in. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought us to his home, where he had four she-goats.He said to me, "Miqdad, divide their milk into four shares among us." So I would divide it into four portions for us.One night the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed in returning, and I said to myself that he must have gone to one of the Ansar and eaten until satisfied and drunk until quenched, so what if I drank his share? I kept thinking this until I got up, took his share, and drank it. Then I covered the cup.When I finished, regret came over me about what I had just done. I thought, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will come back hungry and find nothing. So I covered myself with my cloak and began turning the matter over in my mind.While I was in that state, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and gave a greeting that one awake could hear but would not wake one asleep. Then he came to the cup, uncovered it, and saw nothing in it. He raised his head and said, "O Allah, feed whoever feeds me, and give drink to whoever gives me drink."I seized the opportunity of that supplication. I got up, took the knife, and went over to the goats to feel which of them was the fattest. My hand did not pass over the udder of any one of them without finding it full of milk. I milked them until I had filled the cup, then brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.I said, "Drink, Messenger of Allah."He raised his head toward me and said, "Some mischief of yours, Miqdad. What is the story?"I said, "Drink first, then the story."So he drank until quenched, then handed it to me, and I drank.He asked, "What is the story?"I told him what had happened. He said, "This is a blessing that has descended from the heavens. Why did you not let me know so we could give our two companions to drink?"I said, "When the blessing has reached you and me, I do not care who else has missed out."

حدثنا يزيد أنبأنا حماد بن سلمة عن ثابت عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى

عن المقداد بن الأسود قال

قدمت أنا وصاحبان لي على رسول الله ﷺ فأصابنا جوع شديد فتعرضنا للناس فلم يضفنا أحد فانطلق بنا رسول الله ﷺ إلى منزله وعنده أربع أعنز فقال لي يا مقداد جزئ ألبانها بيننا أرباعا فكنت أجزئه بيننا أرباعا فاحتبس رسول الله ﷺ ذات ليلة فحدثت نفسي أن رسول الله ﷺ قد أتى بعض الأنصار فأكل حتى شبع وشرب حتى روي فلو شربت نصيبه فلم أزل كذلك حتى قمت إلى نصيبه فشربته ثم غطيت القدح فلما فرغت أخذني ما قدم وما حدث فقلت يجيء رسول الله ﷺ جائعا ولا يجد شيئا فتسجيت وجعلت أحدث نفسي فبينا أنا كذلك إذ دخل رسول الله ﷺ فسلم تسليمة يسمع اليقظان ولا يوقظ النائم ثم أتى القدح فكشفه فلم ير شيئا فقال اللهم أطعم من أطعمني واسق من سقاني واغتنمت الدعوة فقمت إلى الشفرة فأخذتها ثم أتيت الأعنز فجعلت أجتسها أيها أسمن فلا تمر يدي على ضرع واحدة إلا وجدتها حافلا فحلبت حتى ملأت القدح ثم أتيت رسول الله ﷺ فقلت اشرب يا رسول الله فرفع رأسه إلي فقال بعض سوآتك يا مقداد ما الخبر قلت اشرب ثم الخبر فشرب حتى روي ثم ناولني فشربت فقال ما الخبر فأخبرته فقال هذه بركة نزلت من السماء فهلا أعلمتني حتى نسقي صاحبينا فقلت إذا أصابتني وإياك البركة فما أبالي من أخطأت
