Huzaifa bin Yaman reported,

When he returned from Umar, he said that when we sat with Umar, he was asking the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, "Which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the trials?"They replied, "We heard it."Umar said, "Perhaps you mean the trial of a man regarding his family and property?"They said, "Yes."He said, "That is not what I am asking about. That kind is wiped away by prayer, fasting, and charity. Rather, which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the trials that surge like the waves of the sea?"The people fell silent, and I thought he meant me. I said, "I did."He said, "You did, may your father be praised."I said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Trials will be presented to hearts like a reed mat woven stick by stick. Any heart that rejects them will have a white spot placed in it, and any heart that absorbs them will have a black spot placed in it, until hearts become of two kinds. One is white like a smooth stone, harmed by no trial as long as the heavens and the earth endure. The other is black and dust-colored, like an overturned jug,'" and he tilted his palm, "'recognizing no good and rejecting no evil, except what its desires have soaked into it.'"I told him that between him and that trial there was a closed door, which was about to be broken open.Umar said, "Broken open, may you have no father? "I said, "Yes."He said, "If it had been opened, perhaps it could have been shut again."I said, "No, rather it will be broken."I told him that the door was a man who would be killed or who would die. This was a narration without confusion or error.
