Khalid bin Khalid Yashkuri reported,

I set out at the time when Tustar was conquered, and eventually arrived at Kufa. I entered the mosque, and there I noticed a circle of people in which sat a man of middle stature with a fine mouth, who appeared to be one of the people of Hijaz.I asked, "Who is this man?"The people replied, "Don't you know him?"I said, "No."They said, "This is Huzaifa bin Yaman, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."So I sat down, and he was speaking to the people. He said, "People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil."The people present found this strange of him, so he said to them, "I shall tell you why I asked about that. Islam came when it came, and brought a state of affairs unlike that of the days of ignorance. I had been given understanding of the Quran. Some men would come and ask him about good, while I would ask him about evil.I said, 'Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good, just as there was evil before it?'He said, 'Yes.'I said, 'What is the protection from it, Messenger of Allah?'He said, 'The sword.'I said, 'Will anything remain after this sword?'He said, 'Yes. There will be rule marred by impurities, and a truce overlaid with rancor.'I said, 'Then what?'He said, 'Then callers to misguidance will arise. If Allah has on earth at that time a successor who lashes your back and takes your wealth, stay close to him. Otherwise, die while biting onto the trunk of a tree.'I said, 'Then what?'He said, 'After that the Dajjal will come out, having with him a river and a fire. Whoever falls into his fire, his reward is assured and his sin is cast off, and whoever falls into his river, his sin is assured and his reward is cast off.'I said, 'Then what?'He said, 'Then the foal will be born and not ridden until the Hour comes.'"The phrase "a man of middle stature" refers to one of medium build. As for his words, "What is the protection from it?" he answered, "The sword." Qatada used to apply this to the apostasy that occurred in the time of Abu Bakr. As for "rule marred by impurities and a truce," he meant a peace settlement, and his words "overlaid with rancor" mean upon hidden grudges.Abdul-Razzaq was asked, "From whom is this explanation?" He said, "From Qatada, as he claimed."
