When Salman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he arrived in Madinah, he brought a tray with fresh dates on it and set it down before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is this, Salman?"Salman replied, "It is charity for you and your companions."He said, "Take it away, for we do not eat charity."So Salman took it away. The next day he came with the same thing, carrying it, and placed it before him.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is this, Salman?"Salman replied, "It is a gift for you."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Help yourselves."Salman then looked at the seal on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and believed in him. He belonged to the Jews at the time, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought him for such and such a number of dirhams, on the condition that palm trees be planted and that Salman work among them until they bore fruit. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ planted the palms himself, all except one palm, which Umar planted. The palms bore fruit that same year, but that one palm did not.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with this one?"Umar said, "I planted that one, Messenger of Allah."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pulled it up and planted it himself, and it bore fruit that same year.
