A man was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his military expeditions and fought with great valor. The Muslims marveled at his bravery, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is among the people of the Fire."We said, "Fighting in the path of Allah alongside the Messenger of Allah? Allah and His Messenger know best."The man went out to battle, and when his wounds became severe, he placed the tip of his sword between his breasts and leaned upon it, killing himself. Someone came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "The man about whom you said what you said, I saw him writhing with the sword run through him."The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise, as it appears to people, while he is in fact among the people of the Fire. And a man may perform the deeds of the people of the Fire, as it appears to people, while he is in fact among the people of Paradise."
حدثنا أبو النضر حدثنا عبد الرحمن يعني ابن عبد الله بن دينار عن أبي حازم
كان مع رسول الله ﷺ رجل في بعض مغازيه فأبلى بلاء حسنا فعجب المسلمون من بلائه فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما إنه من أهل النار قلنا في سبيل الله مع رسول الله الله ورسوله أعلم قال فخرج الرجل فلما اشتدت به الجراح وضع ذباب سيفه بين ثدييه ثم اتكأ عليه فأتي رسول الله ﷺ فقيل له الرجل الذي قلت له ما قلت قد رأيته يتضرب والسيف بين أضعافه فقال النبي ﷺ إن الرجل ليعمل بعمل أهل الجنة حتى يبدو للناس وإنه لمن أهل النار وإنه ليعمل عمل أهل النار فيما يبدو للناس وإنه لمن أهل الجنة
