There was a dispute among some people from the Ansar, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to reconcile between them. The time for prayer arrived, and Bilal came to Abu Bakr and said, "Abu Bakr, the time for prayer has come and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not here. Shall I call the adhan and the iqamah so that you may step forward and lead the prayer?"Abu Bakr replied, "Do as you wish."So Abu Bakr stepped forward and began the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, and the people clapped to alert Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr started to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him to remain in his place. Abu Bakr did move back, however, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped forward and led the prayer. When he had finished, he said, "Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying in your place?"Abu Bakr answered, "It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafa to stand in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Prophet ﷺ then asked the others, "Why did you clap?"They said, "To alert Abu Bakr."He said, "Clapping is for women, and saying tasbih is for men."
