Abu Idris reported,

I entered the mosque of Hims and sat down with a circle of thirty-two men from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. One of them would say, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," and would relate a hadith. Then another would say, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," and would relate a hadith.Among them was a man with deep black eyes and gleaming front teeth. Whenever they were uncertain about anything, they would refer it back to him and accept whatever he said about it. I had never sat in such a gathering before that day, nor have I sat in one like it since. The group then dispersed, and I did not know the name of a single one of them, nor where any of them lived.I spent a night unlike any other. I said to myself, "I am a man who seeks knowledge. I sat with the companions of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, yet I did not learn the name of a single one of them, nor where any of them lived."When morning came, I went early to the mosque, and there I found the very man to whom they would refer their questions, praying beside one of the pillars of the mosque. I sat down beside him, and when he finished, I said, "Servant of Allah, by Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah تبارك وتعالى."He took hold of my garment and drew me close to him, then said, "You truly love me for the sake of Allah?"I said, "Yes, by Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah."He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Those who love one another for the majesty of Allah will be in the shade of Allah and the shade of His Throne on a day when there will be no shade but His.'"I rose from his side, and there I came upon one of the men who had been with him the day before. I said, "A man told me a certain hadith."He said, "He will not have told you anything but the truth."So I informed him of what I had heard, and he said, "I have heard that, and something even better. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reporting from his Lord تبارك وتعالى, 'My love is assured for those who love one another for My sake, My love is assured for those who give to one another for My sake, and My love is assured for those who visit one another for My sake.'"I said, "Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?"He said, "I am Ubada bin Samit."I asked, "And who was the other man?"He said, "Muaz bin Jabal."
