Abu Qatada reported,

A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about fasting on the Day of Arafah.He replied, "I trust that with Allah it serves as expiation for two years, the past one and the coming one."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, what about a man who fasts the entire year?"He replied, "He has neither fasted nor broken his fast," or "He has not fasted and has not broken his fast."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, what about a man who fasts one day and breaks his fast the next?"He replied, "That is the fast of my brother Dawud ."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, what about a man who fasts one day and breaks his fast for two?"He replied, "I would wish to be granted the strength for that."The man said, "What about a man who fasts two days and breaks his fast for one?"He replied, "Who is able to do that?"He was also asked about fasting on the Day of Ashura, and he said, "I trust that with Allah it serves as expiation for one year."

أن رجلا سأل النبي ﷺ عن صوم يوم عرفة فقال أحتسب على الله كفارة سنتين ماضية ومستقبلة قال يا رسول الله أرأيت رجلا يصوم الدهر كله قال لا صام ولا أفطر أو ما صام وما أفطر قال يا رسول الله أرأيت رجلا يصوم يوما ويفطر يوما قال ذاك صوم أخي داود عليه السلام قال يا رسول الله أرأيت رجلا يصوم يوما ويفطر يومين قال وددت أني طوقت ذلك قال أرأيت رجلا يصوم يومين ويفطر يوما قال ومن يطيق ذلك قال وسئل عن صوم يوم عاشوراء قال أحتسب على الله كفارة سنة
