Abu Qatada reported,

He was traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when, along one of the roads to Mecca, he stayed behind with some of his companions who were in the state of ihram, while he himself was not. He spotted a wild donkey, mounted his horse, and asked his companions to hand him his whip. They refused. He then asked them for his spear, and again they refused. So he took it himself, charged at the donkey, and killed it.Some of the Prophet's companions ﷺ ate from it, while others refused. When they caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they asked him about it. He said, "It is simply food that Allah عز وجل has provided for you to eat."
