I, along with some young men from Quraysh, entered upon Ibn Abbas. They asked him, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite during the Zuhr and Asr prayers?"He replied, "No."They said, "Perhaps he recited silently to himself?"He said, "May you be scratched! This is even worse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a servant commanded by Allah. He conveyed what he was sent with. He did not single us out over other people with anything except three things. He commanded us to perform ablution thoroughly, not to eat from charity, and not to mate a donkey with a mare."

دخلت أنا وفتية من قريش على ابن عباس قال فسألوه هل كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرأ في الظهر والعصر قال لا قال فقالوا فلعله كان يقرأ في نفسه قال خمشا هذه شر إن رسول الله ﷺ كان عبدا مأمورا بلغ ما أرسل به وإنه لم يخصنا دون الناس إلا بثلاث أمرنا أن نسبغ الوضوء ولا نأكل الصدقة ولا ننزي حمارا على فرس
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud (1:297) narrated it from Musaddad from Abdul-Warith from Musa bin Salim. Tirmidhi (3:31) narrated it in abridged form from Abu Kurayb from Ismail bin Ibrahim from Musa, and said, "A hasan sahih hadith." Nasai narrated it at length (2:121) from Humayd bin Masada from Hammad from Musa, and in abridged form (1:34) from Yahya bin Habib from Hammad from Musa. Ibn Majah narrated from it the command to perform wudu thoroughly (1:85) from Ahmad bin Abdah from Hammad from Musa. Part of it has already appeared, both at length and abridged, at 1977, 2060, and 2092. See also 1887 and 2085.Khasha, Ibn Athir said, it means he invoked against him that his face or skin be scratched, just as one says jadan (may his hands be cut off) or qatan (may he be severed), and it is in the accusative case governed by an unstated verb.
