A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the mosque and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense that requires a prescribed penalty, so apply it to me."The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. The man repeated his statement once more. Then the prayer was called, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and afterwards left.Abu Umama said, "The man followed him, and I followed too." Abdul-Samad in his version said, "I left with the Prophet ﷺ while the man was following him, so that I could learn what he would say to him."The man said to him, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense that requires a prescribed penalty, so apply it to me."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Did you not perform ablution before leaving your house, perform it well, and then pray with us?"He answered, "Yes."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then Allah has indeed forgiven you your prescribed penalty," or, "your sin." Ikrima was uncertain which.Abdul-Samad in his version said, "I left with the Prophet ﷺ and the man followed him."
حدثنا أبو نوح وعبد الصمد قالا حدثنا عكرمة وقال أبو نوح أخبرنا عكرمة بن عمار عن شداد بن عبد الله قال سمعت
أتى رجل رسول الله ﷺ وهو في المسجد فقال يا رسول الله إني أصبت حدا فأقمه علي قال فسكت النبي ﷺ ثم عاد فقال له مرة أخرى ثم أقيمت الصلاة فصلى رسول الله ﷺ ثم انصرف قال أبو أمامة فاتبعه الرجل قال وتبعته قال عبد الصمد في حديثه فانصرفت مع النبي ﷺ والرجل يتبعه لأعلم ما يقول له قال فقال له الرجل يا رسول الله إني أصبت حدا فأقمه علي قال فقال له النبي ﷺ أليس قد توضأت قبل أن تخرج من منزلك فأحسنت الوضوء ثم صليت معنا قال بلى قال فإن الله قد غفر لك حدك أو ذنبك شك فيه عكرمة قال عبد الصمد في حديثه فانصرفت مع النبي ﷺ واتبعه الرجل
