The Messenger of Allah ﷺ launched a military expedition, so I came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that I be granted martyrdom."He said, "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils."So we went on the expedition, and we returned safely with spoils. Then he launched another expedition, and I came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that I be granted martyrdom."He said, "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils."So we went on the expedition, and we returned safely with spoils. Then he launched yet another expedition, so I came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have come to you three times in succession asking you to pray to Allah for me for martyrdom, and you said, 'O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils,' so we went on the expedition and returned safely with spoils. So command me, Messenger of Allah, with something through which Allah will benefit me."He said, "You must fast, for there is nothing like it."The narrator said, smoke was hardly ever seen rising from Abu Umama's house during the day. When smoke was seen during the day, they would know that a guest had come to them, because he and his family used to fast.He said, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, you commanded me with something that I hope Allah has benefited me through. Now command me with something else."He said, "Know that you do not perform a single prostration to Allah without Allah raising you a degree by it and removing a sin from you by it."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا مهدي بن ميمون عن محمد بن أبي يعقوب عن رجاء بن حيوة
أنشأ رسول الله ﷺ غزوا فأتيته فقلت يا رسول الله ادع الله لي بالشهادة قال اللهم سلمهم وغنمهم فغزونا فسلمنا وغنمنا ثم أنشأ غزوا آخر فأتيته فقلت يا رسول الله ادع الله لي بالشهادة قال اللهم سلمهم وغنمهم فغزونا فسلمنا وغنمنا ثم أنشأ غزوا آخر فأتيته فقلت يا رسول الله أتيتك تترى ثلاثا أسألك أن تدعو الله لي بالشهادة فقلت اللهم سلمهم وغنمهم فغزونا فسلمنا وغنمنا فمرني يا رسول الله بأمر ينفعني الله به قال عليك بالصوم فإنه لا مثل له قال وكان أبو أمامة لا يكاد يرى في بيته الدخان بالنهار فإذا رئي الدخان بالنهار عرفوا أن ضيفا اعتراهم مما كان يصوم هو وأهله قال فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله إنك أمرتني بأمر أرجو أن يكون الله قد نفعني به فمرني بأمر آخر قال اعلم أنك لا تسجد لله سجدة إلا رفعك الله بها درجة وحط عنك بها خطيئة
