The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No people went astray after being guided except that they were given to disputation." Then he recited this verse, "They did not present it to you except for argument. Rather, they are a contentious people" [Zukhruf 43:58].
حدثنا عبد الواحد الحداد حدثنا شهاب بن خراش عن حجاج بن دينار عن أبي غالب
قال رسول الله ﷺ ما ضل قوم بعد هدى كانوا عليه إلا أوتوا الجدل ثم تلا هذه الآية {ما ضربوه لك إلا جدلا بل هم قوم خصمون}
Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of Shihab bin Kharash, whom Muslim placed below the level of sahih in his introduction. Tirmidhi related the hadith, 5/353, no. 3253, and said it is hasan sahih, and Ibn Majah related it, 1/19, no. 48, in the introduction.
