Prayer went through three stages, and fasting went through three stages. As for the stages of prayer, when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah he prayed toward Bayt al-Maqdis for seventeen months. Then Allah revealed to him, "We have certainly seen you turning your face about toward the heaven, so We shall surely turn you toward a qibla that will please you. So turn your face toward Masjid al-Haram, and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it" [Baqarah 2:144]. So Allah turned him toward Makkah. That was one stage. The people used to gather for prayer and would call one another to it, until they came close to using a clapper, or nearly did. Then a man of the Ansar named Abdullah bin Zayd came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I saw something in a dream, though if I said I was not asleep I would be telling the truth. While I was between sleep and wakefulness, I saw a figure wearing two green garments. He faced the qibla and said, 'Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,' repeating each phrase twice until he finished the adhan. Then he paused for a moment and said the same words again, except that he added to them, 'The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Teach it to Bilal so that he may call the adhan with it."So Bilal was the first to call the adhan with it. Then Umar bin Khattab came and said, "Messenger of Allah, the very same thing came to me as came to him, except that he got to you before me." That was the second stage. The people used to come to the prayer after the Prophet ﷺ had already performed part of it. A man would signal to another man who had arrived, indicating how much of the prayer had been performed, and he would say one or two, then he would pray those units and afterward join the congregation in their prayer. Then Muaz came and said, "I will not find him in any state without joining him in it, and then making up whatever I have missed."So he came, and the Prophet ﷺ had already performed part of the prayer. Muaz stayed with him, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had completed his prayer, Muaz stood and made up what he had missed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Muaz has established a practice for you, so do as he has done." Those were the three stages. As for the stages of fasting, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah he began fasting three days of every month. Yazid said, he fasted like this for seventeen months, from Rabi Awwal until Ramadan, three days of every month, and he fasted the day of Ashura. Then Allah made fasting obligatory upon him and revealed, "You who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you" [Baqarah 2:183], up to the words of this verse, "And upon those who are able, a fidya of feeding a poor person" [Baqarah 2:184]. So whoever wished fasted, and whoever wished fed a poor person, and that sufficed for him. Then Allah
revealed the other verse, "The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was sent down" [Baqarah 2:185], up to His words, "So whoever among you is present during the month, let him fast it" [Baqarah 2:185]. So Allah established fasting as binding upon the healthy person who is at home, and He granted a concession in it to the sick and the traveler, and He kept the feeding of the poor in place for the elderly person unable to fast. Those were two stages. The people used to eat, drink, and go to their wives so long as they had not slept, but once they slept they had to abstain. Then a man of the Ansar named Sirma spent the day working while fasting until evening came. He came to his family, prayed the evening prayer, and then fell asleep, so he neither ate nor drank until morning came, and he began the next day still fasting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him utterly exhausted and asked, "Why do I see you so severely worn out?"Sirma replied, "Messenger of Allah, I worked yesterday, and when I came home I threw myself down and slept, and morning came upon me while I was still fasting."Umar, meanwhile, had gone to a woman, either a slave woman or a free woman, after he had slept. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him about it, so Allah
revealed, "It has been made lawful for you to go to your wives on the night of the fast" [Baqarah 2:187], up to His words, "Then complete the fast until nightfall" [Baqarah 2:187].Yazid said, he fasted nineteen months, from Rabi Awwal until Ramadan.
