Muaz bin Jabal reported,

Muaz reported, "We were returning with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the expedition of Tabuk. When I saw him alone, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise.'He replied, 'Excellent! You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one whom Allah makes it easy for. You establish the obligatory prayer, pay the prescribed zakat, and meet Allah without associating anything with Him. Shall I not guide you to the head of the matter, its pillar, and the peak of its summit? As for the head of the matter, it is Islam, so whoever submits is safe. Its pillar is the prayer. And the peak of its summit is jihad in the path of Allah.'Then he said, 'Shall I not guide you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and the standing of a servant in the depth of the night.' Then he recited this verse, "Their sides forsake their beds as they call upon their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have provided them." [Sajdah 32:16]Then he said, 'Shall I not tell you of that which controls all of this?'"Muaz continued, "Then a group of people approached, and I feared they would distract the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from me." Shuba said, "Or words to that effect."Muaz said, "So I said, 'Messenger of Allah, your saying, "Shall I not tell you of that which controls all of this?"' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed with his hand to his tongue.I said, 'Messenger of Allah, are we held accountable for what we say?'He replied, 'May your mother be bereaved of you, Muaz! Is there anything that throws people on their faces into the Fire other than the harvests of their tongues?'"Shuba said, "Hakam said to me, 'Maymun bin Abu Shabib also narrated it to me.'" Hakam said, "I heard it from him forty years ago."

عن معاذ بن جبل قال

أقبلنا مع رسول الله ﷺ من غزوة تبوك فلما رأيته خليا قلت يا رسول الله أخبرني بعمل يدخلني الجنة قال بخ لقد سألت عن عظيم وهو يسير على من يسره الله عليه تقيم الصلاة المكتوبة وتؤدي الزكاة المفروضة وتلقى الله عز وجل لا تشرك به شيئا أولا أدلك على رأس الأمر وعموده وذروة سنامه أما رأس الأمر فالإسلام فمن أسلم سلم وأما عموده فالصلاة وأما ذروة سنامه فالجهاد في سبيل الله أولا أدلك على أبواب الخير الصوم جنة والصدقة وقيام العبد في جوف الليل يكفر الخطايا وتلا هذه الآية {تتجافى جنوبهم عن المضاجع يدعون ربهم خوفا وطمعا ومما رزقناهم ينفقون} أولا أدلك على أملك ذلك لك كله قال فأقبل نفر قال فخشيت أن يشغلوا عني رسول الله ﷺ قال شعبة أو كلمة نحوها قال فقلت يا رسول الله قولك أولا أدلك على أملك ذلك لك كله قال فأشار رسول الله ﷺ بيده إلى لسانه قال قلت يا رسول الله وإنا لنؤاخذ بما نتكلم به قال ثكلتك أمك معاذ وهل يكب الناس على مناخرهم إلا حصائد ألسنتهم قال شعبة قال لي الحكم وحدثني به ميمون بن أبي شبيب وقال الحكم سمعته منه منذ أربعين سنة
