During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when a man arrived late and missed part of the prayer, he would ask the others, and they would gesture to him indicating how much of the prayer he had missed. He would then begin by making up what he had missed before joining the congregation in their prayer.Then Muaz bin Jabal came while the people were sitting in their prayer, so he sat down with them. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, Muaz stood up and made up what he had missed.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do as Muaz has done."
حدثنا عبد الصمد حدثنا عبد العزيز يعني ابن مسلم حدثنا الحصين عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى
كان الناس على عهد رسول الله ﷺ إذا سبق الرجل ببعض صلاته سألهم فأومئوا إليه بالذي سبق به من الصلاة فيبدأ فيقضي ما سبق ثم يدخل مع القوم في صلاتهم فجاء معاذ بن جبل والقوم قعود في صلاتهم فقعد فلما فرغ رسول الله ﷺ قام فقضى ما كان سبق به فقال رسول الله ﷺ اصنعوا كما صنع معاذ
