Hassan bin Thabit was reciting poetry in the mosque when Umar passed by and shot him a glance. Hassan said, "By Allah, I used to recite poetry here in the presence of one who was better than you," fearing that Umar would rebuke him by invoking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Umar passed on and left him alone.
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أنا معمر عن الزهري
أنشد حسان بن ثابت وهو في المسجد فمر عمر به فلحظه فقال حسان والله لقد أنشدت فيه من هو خير منك فخشي أن يرميه برسول الله ﷺ فجاز وتركه
